On Finger Paint Family, discover what modern UK fatherhood really looks like, from the emotional highs of fulfillment and empathy to the surprising challenges dads face today.
New research from greetings card marketplace thortful reveals that 41 percent of UK fathers feel the need to be more involved in raising their children compared to previous generations, driven by shifts in modern parenting expectations, personal fulfillment, and changing generational dynamics.

The Impact of Fatherhood on Men
Parenthood brings profound personal changes, with 48 percent of men reporting a deep sense of fulfillment after having children. Thirty percent of British fathers state that parenthood provides much needed structure and stability in their lives.
Emotional growth is another major theme, as 26 percent of men note they have become more empathetic, understanding, and patient. Furthermore, 12 percent claim their overall health has improved since welcoming children into the world.
The Challenges of the Transition
Not every father finds the adjustment seamless, since 9 percent feel they have lost their social life entirely. Seven percent report that their daily life is more chaotic, leading to a decline in mental health due to elevated stress levels.
Experts suggest that open conversations with trusted partners, friends, or family members can ease the pressure. Organizations such as Dad Matters, Family Lives, Fathers Network Scotland, and Hub of Hope also offer vital online networks and support groups.

Motivations Behind Becoming a Father
Personal legacy drives many British men, with 51 percent always wanting to create a family and pass down traditions. For 21 percent of respondents, fatherhood was always part of the plan since childhood.
Relationships and lifestyle changes also play a large role in the decision to have children. Thirty percent view parenthood as the next logical step in their partnership, while 17 percent wanted to fulfill their partner’s wishes.
Other motivating factors include wanting a deeper connection to life for 25 percent of men, seeking emotional maturity for 16 percent, and desiring a calmer lifestyle for 14 percent. Additionally, 19 percent of men wanted to build the strong father-child relationship they never experienced themselves, aiming to communicate more openly and express love frequently.
Understanding Father-Child Bonds
The majority of UK fathers enjoy strong connections with their children. Fifty-six percent state that their bond has always been great, highlighting positive ongoing relationships.
Connection remains a work in progress for others, as 18 percent love each other but rarely voice their feelings. Thirteen percent admit they struggle to connect with their kids, and 5 percent feel too busy to actively improve the bond.
Building strong relationships requires time, active communication, and consistent effort. Showing genuine interest, carving out dedicated time, offering encouragement, and seeking community support help fathers bridge these gaps successfully.
