As summer brings warmer weather, parents naturally dress their little ones in light, breezy clothing to keep them cool and comfortable. However, when it comes to car seat safety, not all summer outfits are created equal. Certain clothing items can compromise the effectiveness of a car seat’s harness, putting your baby or young child at risk. To help you navigate these challenges, we’ve compiled expert advice on what to avoid and how to ensure your child stays safe on the road during a heatwave.

How To Keep Your Baby Safe In A Car Seat In Summer

Clothing to Avoid in Car Seats

Swimsuits or Puddle Suits

Slippery fabrics like those found in swimsuits or puddle suits can reduce the friction needed for a car seat harness to hold your child securely. In the event of a sudden stop or crash, these materials may cause the harness to slip, compromising safety.

Tip: After a fun day at the beach or splashing in puddles, dry your child off with a soft towel or cover-up and change them into snug, non-slippery clothing before buckling them into their car seat.

Maxi Dresses, Long Skirts, or Loose Clothing

Flowy summer outfits like maxi dresses or loose clothing may be perfect for warm weather, but they pose a risk in car seats. Excess fabric can bunch up under the harness, preventing a tight, secure fit and making it difficult to fasten buckles properly.

Tip: Choose fitted clothing, such as shorts, leggings, or playsuits, that won’t interfere with the harness’s snug fit.

Flip-Flops or Loose Sandals

In an emergency, your child needs footwear that stays secure to allow for quick evacuation. Flimsy flip-flops or loose sandals can fall off or get caught in the car seat, slowing down the process of safely removing your child.

Tip: Opt for secure, closed-toe shoes that stay on during travel and make evacuation easier if needed.

Sun Hats with Chin Straps or Neck Cords

While sun hats are great for outdoor play, they’re not safe for car seats. Hats with straps or cords can get caught in the car seat’s mechanisms, posing an entanglement risk during a crash.

Tip: Skip the hat in the car and use window shades or tinted windows to protect your child from the sun while keeping them safe.

Puffy or Oversized Jackets

Even lightweight puffy jackets, often worn on cooler summer mornings, can create gaps between the harness and your child’s body. This bulk can make the harness appear snug when it’s actually too loose, reducing its ability to restrain your child effectively in a crash.

Tip: Dress your child in a thin fleece or hoodie for warmth. After buckling them in, you can add a light blanket over the harness for extra coziness without compromising safety.

The Pinch Test: Ensure a Secure Fit

To confirm your child’s clothing isn’t interfering with the car seat harness, try the pinch test:

  • Buckle your child into their car seat and tighten the harness.
  • At the shoulder, try to pinch the harness strap.
  • If you can pinch excess webbing, the harness is too loose, likely due to bulky clothing. Adjust the outfit or tighten the straps until no excess webbing can be pinched.

Final Thoughts for Parents

Keeping your baby cool and comfortable during a heatwave is important, but safety in the car seat comes first. By avoiding slippery, loose, or bulky clothing and performing the pinch test, you can ensure your child is securely fastened for every journey. Small changes, like swapping a swimsuit for fitted clothes or using window shades instead of sun hats, can make a big difference in keeping your little one safe.

Stay vigilant, stay informed, and enjoy safe summer travels with your family!
